And 'quite shocking what emerges from the file "The crisis in the dish of the Italians in 2014" presented by Coldiretti, based on analyzes carried out by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).
Coldiretti, in the person of its president Roberto Moncalvo, has expressed concern about the food security situation. Following the economic crisis afflicting the majority of the population, people are forced more and more often, more or less consciously, to purchase substitutes, artificial flavors and products at low cost but high risk.
It is no coincidence that the agri-food imports in Italy reached a record figure of 39 billion euro in 2013, an increase of 20% compared to 2007.
Coldiretti has therefore ranked the most irregular products that have chemical residues over the threshold of the guard, it is mostly of products that come from countries where controls are less stringent than those set in Italy. Here is the list of products at risk:
1 - Hot pepper from Vietnam. The 61.5 percent of the samples was irregular due to the presence of chemical residues, mainly used for the production of typical sauces or canning.
2 - Pomegranates from Turkey (40.5% of irregularities).
3 - Passion Fruit from Columbia (25%).
4 - lentils from Turkey with 24.3% of irregularities are at risk in one case out of four for chemical residues.
5 - The oranges of the Uruguay have 19% of samples above the legal limits for the presence of pesticides such as imazalil but also of fenthion, and orthophenyl, banned in Italy.
6. Pineapple Ghana irregular in 15.6% of cases.
7. The leaves of tea in China, whose imports in the first months of 2014 increased by 1,100%, with irregularities resulting in 15.1% of samples.
8. Rice of India 12.9% of irregularities.
9. Beans Kenya does not conform in 10.8% of cases.
10. Persimmon Israeli-standard in 10.7% of the assessments made.
This is puzzling because values are derived from imports from a country like Italy could count on local products highly secure, with chemical residues above the limit of only 0.2 percent, less than nine times those of the average European (1.6 percent of irregularities) and even 32 times compared to non-EU (7.9 percent of irregularities on average).
Unfortunately, the crisis comes at a high price on the level of health.
